A shared beginning
Paul addresses a community, not isolated achievers. Our summary, not a Bible quotation.
Read the passage in your BibleWhere this passage sits
Paul writes to the church in Philippi, a Roman colony in Macedonia, while imprisoned. The letter is usually dated around AD 55–62; scholars differ about the location and exact date. It is a pastoral letter of friendship, partnership, encouragement, and correction. Read this section alongside the passages immediately before and after it; chapter and verse divisions came later.
A common misreading: Grace and peace are a greeting, not a promise that hardship disappears.
